Self-care

Last year I learned what intentional self-care was. I mean it's not like I didn't know what it meant. It means to take care of yourself. I know the importance of staying hydrated, taking vitamins, exercising and getting enough rest in order to be the very best me. However, there is quite a bit more to self-care as it relates to my mental wellness.

Honestly, self-care is a lot for me. Here’s how the idea of self-care plays out in my head. ‘I am going to practice self-care. Oh my goodness, I have no idea of what I am going to do to practice intentional self-care. Let me google some things to do for self-care.’ A million hours later one of two things happens, I have no idea of what I am going to do in regards to self-care or I have 984,206,870 ideas written in a notebook to start doing asap. Both are depleting of any joy on my journey to be kind to myself. I think this is how I ended up flaking on my self-care by the end of 2021.

At the end of 2021 I kinda flaked on my self-care. I mean I went and got a pedicure or got my hair done but those things were penciled in and rushed. This year I didn’t know where to start but I knew I didn’t want to phone my self-care in. I went to Google, as always, and God had mercy on me! I quickly found a 30 self-care challenge on ETSY (30 day self care challenge by CurvesandSwirls). The activities are free and I don’t have to figure anything out! It’s all right at my finger tips!

In 2021 I started strong with my self-care (see Transformation Part I and Part II). In 2022 I am going to be even more intentional about my self-care journey. I enjoy doing things for my well-being. Last year I basically ran out of ideas of how to go about intentional self-care activities. This year I will stick with different 30 day self-care challenges that suit me. Today I made an easy at-home hydrating face mask (equal parts coconut oil, honey, and lemon juice) and spoiled myself. I really want to encourage each of you to carve out at least 5 mins per day for themselves. Sit on the porch, go for a walk, practice mindfulness, take yourself to dinner, take a long shower or bath. Do whatever you choose, just do something. You are worth 5 minutes and so much more!
